The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire

TEUTOBERGER WALD, 9 AD

Early Imperial Romans vs. Early Germans

> Rise & Fall of Rome > Events > WADBAG

Carrhae - Cantabrian Revolt - Teutoberger Wald - Emesa - Adrianople - Chalons - Dara

The Roman force at Teutoberger Wald was led by Publius Quinctilius Varus, a noble from an old family, a diplomat who had been named the governor of the new province of Germania in 7AD. His opponent Arminius had lived in Rome as a hostage in his youth, where he had received a military education and had even been given the rank of Equestrian. After his return, he was expected to be an ally of Rome, and behaved accordingly towards Varus. In secret, he forged an alliance of Germanic tribes that had traditionally been enemies (the Cherusci, Marsi, Chatti, and Bructeri), but which he was able to unite due to outrage over Varus' arrogant style of governing the province. While Varus was on his way from his summer camp to the winter headquarters near the Rhine, he heard reports of a local rebellion, fabricated by Arminius. Varus decided to quell this uprising immediately and take a detour through territory unknown to the Romans. Arminius, who accompanied Varus, most likely directed him deliberately to a route that would facilitate an ambush. He then left under the pretext of contacting Roman allies, to meet his own troops who must have been waiting in the vicinity.

Initial Deployment

Here is a view of the scenario's opening setup. The Roman march column moves from right to left through the dense brush, an element of cavalry in the lead. All of the solid green area is considered bad going, the lightly flocked tan sections are good going. The German warband lay in ambush surrounding the Roman forces.

This is a close-up of the Roman column. Two elements of Auxilia, sensing the imminent German threat have moved out to either side of the Roman baggage to investigate.

This is a view from the rear of the Roman column. German warband have moved into position to ambush a Roman auxilia in the rear.

looks on helplessly.

Alex Bostwick (right) doesn't seem too concerned about Robbie Fisher (left) efforts to help his Romans escape from Teutoberger Wald. Besides, this kind of ambush work builds up an appetite, and this German is hungry.

Jonathan Bostwick (left) comments about the wisdom of his decision to play in the Roman group, given the prospect of escaping from Teutoberger Wald. David Bostwick (right) can relate as he does a major Crassus impersonation near Carrhae.
