Carrhae - Cantabrian Revolt - Teutoberger Wald - Emesa - Adrianople - Chalons - Dara By 450 Roman control of Gaul, as with all of the provinces outside of Italy, had grown feeble. The Visigoths, who had been forcibly settled in Aquitaine a generation before, were growing increasingly restive. The Burgundians, forcibly settled near the Alps, were more submissive, but were likewise looking for openings for revolt. Northern Gaul between the Rhine and Marne rivers had been all but abandoned to the Franks, and Armorica was only nominally part of the empire. Early in 451, Attila crossed the Rhine with his followers and a large number of allies. Aetius, upon learning of the invasion, moved quickly from Italy into Gaul, picking up allies along the way. Attila and Aetius' forces met at the Catalaunian Fields. Initial Deployment
